Lago de Atitlan, Guatemala

We’ve been here for a couple days now- exploring different sides of the lake. What a breathtaking place this is! After spending a few days in Antigua, amidst colorful rows of shops and cafes (and MANY foreigners studying SPanish) we took a bus para el lago!! And let me tell you that bus ride was BY FAR the sketchiest I’ve ever been on! The driver thought it was some sort of a game- he was racing other buses on a ONE LANE road due to road construction. We were wizzing around hairpin turns, passing huge trucks, and all the while the guy driving the bus had a smile on his face…while we were white knuckled (in prayer position!) But…we made it! and as we got off the bus, I turned to SPencer and said, “I haven’t prayed like that in a loooooong time!” Our lives at stake and all- it was still a very worthwhile trip- You arrive at this little town, lakeside, with a gorgeous view of the lake. From there, they pack 20 plus people (and their bags) into 10 man boats. And you’re off…..to whatever little dock calls your name! We stayed the first night in San Marcos- A very spiritual little village- meditation centers and yoga classes abound- all with veggy restaraunts….But not many people are talking because they’re ll on some month long fast/ meditation moon course. Put all this together with lack of electricity, and we decided that it wasn’t the place for us- at this moment. 🙂 So we’re now in the pueblito of Santa Cruz. Winding paths are all around, Mayan women carrying their bebes on their back, with baskets of goods on their heads. THe place we’re staying has hammocks everywhere- all with views of the lake. And all the restaurants are vegetarian! I think Spencer and I may have been Mayan, living at the lake in a past life! THere are 3 volcanoes surrounding el lago- and lets hope that they stay dormant for another few days 🙂 Yesterday Spencer gathered some ninos and played futbol with them in the streets…so cute! they all love him!..

Off to hike to a waterfall!!
